Microsoft OCS 2010 Is Coming To Unified Communications, PBX Killer

Microsoft accidently posted details on their blog (update – Microsoft removed post) mentioning the new name of OCS 14 will be OCS 2010. This surprised me…I was thinking Microsoft might take the opportunity to change the brand name…but that’s just my guess and pure speculation.

Billions spent on IP phones, to get, just a phone. Microsoft’s aims to make the phone, like the typewriter in 2000’s, obsolete in the next decade. “What more do you need than a SIP address [or derivative] in 10 years?” expressed a OCS product manager at Interact 2009. A telling glimpse in to the future?

Since the blog has been pulled, you can view the details at Network World:

Microsoft will ship a new version of its Office Communications Server (OCS) in 2010 and another in the following year or more, according to its TechNet Web site.

The server will include new features, including native E-911 support, designed to finally establish OCS as a PBX replacement rather than a complement, which is the positioning for the current version even with its new SIP-trunking features.

In addition, Microsoft will introduce a new Voice Client Access License (CAL) needed to access the new PBX-killer’s “enterprise-voice” features

Cloud PBX

I would like to see Microsoft implement a cloud pbx system which is a telephony system that works completely over the internet. That would be very impressive to see cloud pbx a large scale possibility.
